Nick McLachlan was awarded the prestigious Eric Palmer Bat Award for best Junior Cricketer. Nick is CPCC's second ever winning of this award after Terry McTeigue's win in 1972/73.

B2 PREMIERSHIP!

Nolans 5, March 15 & 16: CPCC have finished the season with a B2 Premiership after one of the most dramatic finals ever witnessed at Nolans. Leaving the ground on Saturday dejected after Belrose were 2 for 50 chasing their small 121 total, the Towers regrouped behind Peter Clark and Andrew Coates' inspired bowling to take a first innings win by just 2 runs. This was despite a dramatic start to the day with Matt Moore tearing a calf muscle warming up, serious enough for him to be carried from the ground and Kev Faulkner joined him on the injury list with a suspected broken finger. The drama however, didn't end there. CPCC were soon looking into the precipice within minutes of batting again as they collapsed to 6 for 20. Matt Moore used crutches to get to the crease and there he stayed for over an hour, supported by Paul Rovere and finally the wounded Kev Faulkner. Belrose finally faced a target of 60 runs in about 15 minutes. Lusty batting created chaos on the field leaving 8 runs to get off the final over. With 6 runs to get, a wicket fell and time was called leaving CPCC ahead with the first innings result.

Over at Kierle Park 1, the B3s mounted a spirited comeback on day 2 to have Minor Premiers Long Reef in the hole at 5 for 35. Matt Richards picked up several valuable wickets however Long Reef recovered to pass CPCC 6 wickets down. The B3s played it out to the end walking off proudly after their first (for most) Grand Final appearance.

Netball / Nolans

Thurs 8/5: Over the past 3 years or so, there was a good chance the major issue of the day in the Manly Daily was either Manly Hospital, Mona Vale Hospital or the search for a new home for netball. It was said back then, all those months and millions of dollars ago that the solution was simple:

  • Leave netball at John Fisher Park and fix up the courts

  • Leave the hospital at Manly and fix it up

  • Leave the hospital at Mona Vale and fix it up.

With the announcement today that netball will stay at John Fisher Park one third of the issues have been solved and millions of dollars saved. Only 2 to go!

CHUNG WINS SHEARER

B2 Ewen Chung receives The Shearer from Life Member Frank Huxley

CPCC Presentation Night Brookvale Hotel 3/5/08: In front of over 60 of his fellow clubmen, the B2's Ewen Chung received CPCC's most prestigious award - The Bruce Shearer Memorial Trophy. Chung's grand final appearance was enough to just edge out A1 player Pete Henriksen by only a few points in one of the tightest contests in years. In the Club's other major awards, B2 keeper Blake Conde won the Warwick Armstrong (most catches) and the B3s & junior coach Steve Carden won the B&B Moore Clubman.

B GRADE GRAND FINALS!

B2s & B3s Go Through to the Big One

Adam Pressley's B2 & Sam Steindl's B3 teams will represent CPCC on Grand Final Weekend this Saturday & Sunday. Scott McLachlan bowled the B3 development team into their first GF, leading an attack that defended only 126 at the tiny Beverley Job ground. Meanwhile, the Minor Premier B2 team had a comfortable passage through chasing down 93 after Ewen Chung strangled the opposition recording 4/9 off 13 overs. The B2s will play their final at Nolans 5 whilst the B3s will be down the road at Kierle Park 1.

In other games, the A3s couldn't overcome a strong batting display by Cromer in their 6 wicket loss at Nolans 3 and the strong performing B1s, missing several key players, couldn't negotiate their semi being unable to defend 180. The biggest disappointment for the Club however, was the loss of the undefeated flagship A1s who saved their worst performance with the bat for semi-final Saturday. Despite mounting a spirited comeback in an attempt to win outright, the minor-premiers were outplayed early on Saturday losing key wickets and only scoring 124 against North Manly.

Manly Breakers Win 'Chewy Cup'

Harbord Park: 2/3/08 - Brookvale hotel's finest cricket teams played off for the Chewy Cup on Sunday. In the closest fought battle to-date, the Manly Breakers claimed victory for the first time in the Annual open-grade showdown. CPCC are disappointed to lose the Chewy Cup. Seriously, we've looked everywhere and can't find it. If anyone knows its whereabouts please let us know so we can pass it on to the Breakers.

MOSSY BREAKS THE RECORD!

Vic Huxley Oval Saturday Jan 12th, 2008:   After 33 years CPCC's most prestigious record has fallen as Dave Moss surpassed Mike Riggall and Paul Brown's 169 run highest score record. Mossy's supreme innings of 179 not out set up the A1's massive victory over defending premiers Seaforth. The Tower's amassed an incredible 3 for 273 off 35 overs then dismissed Seaforth for 59 with the home side taking the last 6 wickets for 0 runs to cap a remarkable day. Mossy's 2nd wicket partnership with Pete Henriksen (78) of 218 will also test the record books.

CPCC Museum Opens

The CPCC Museum is now on display in the foyer of the Collaroy Plateau Youth Club, Blandford St Collaroy. The display of equipment and memorabilia represents fifty years of club activity including items from the Clubs England Tour. No doubt the collection will grow and who knows, we may be able to display it in our own club house one day. If any members past or present has any items of historical interest, please contact Col Huxley. For more click here.

Henriksen Hits Century No 10!

Lake Park Saturday Jan 26th, 2008:   A1 Pete Henriksen scored his 10th career century with CPCC on Saturday with an unbeaten 103 not out against Cromer. Pete joins Rob Minnett as the only 'Platinum' members of the Centurion Club with ten tons apiece. The score was part of another massive innings for the A1s who piled on 5 for 244 in their 35 over one day win in the local derby. Cromer managed 129 in reply.

Rd7 A1s Lead the Way at the Turn

Another strong win in round 7 over Manly Leagues has left the A1s undefeated through the first half of the season and alone at the top of the premier grade. The B2s and B3s also head their respective grades after claiming the points in their final games of 2007. The A2s finished off with a much needed outright victory to get them back in the hunt whilst the A3s and B1s lost close games but remain well placed.

DOUBLE WICKET COMPETITION THRILLER

Sun Nov 25, Vic Huxley Oval: Junior & B3 player Nick McLachlan teamed with Club President & A1 Captain Col Huxley to win the annual Double Wicket Competition on a countback against the team of A2 Skipper Brenden Ball and A3 Matt Gollege. Twelve teams of 2 battled throughout the afternoon for the Rothmans Trophy under blue skies and in front of a tent full of spectators.  Click here for photo gallery.

Rd6 A1s Lead The Way In Round 6

Rain caused a delayed start to round 6 for most grades and wiped out play for the B2s. Once underway, it was the A1s who lead the way with 273 off 65 overs at Home. The A3s, B1s and B3s posted fair totals whilst the A2s are off to a solid start chasing down their 200+ target.

Facing newcomers to the top grade Nth Steyne, the A1 batsmen made steady progress once the sun came out. Replacement Matt Thompson and regular opener Rob Minnett put on 90 before quick wickets had the top order scurrying for their gear. A modest 200 total was avoided when Huxley (62*) and Haithwaite (31*) put on an unbeaten 74 off the last 7 overs of the day. In the B3s, Tom Carden posted his first 1/2 Century with a score of 60.

A1s Join B1, B2 & B3 Grades At The Top

A strong one day performance against previous top of the table North Manly as seen the unbeaten A1s assume the lead in the standings with a win in Round 5. Wins to the B1s and B2s and a forfeit for the B3s ensured that the strongly performing B Grade squads rolled on in first place for another round. The A2s lost a thriller at Nolans 3 whilst the A3s stumbled with a loss after a couple of big outright wins.

Bert & Daph Elsworthy Celebrate 60 Years

Life member Bert Elsworthy and wife Daphne have recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. The Elsworthys have been involved with CPCC and the Plateau for many of those years with Bert a regular attendant at the CPCC AGM and on the sidelines. Their service has been noted in the article below from the Manly Daily. On a sad note, Bert is not doing so well having been in Mona Vale hospital for some weeks and now care at Terry Hills. CPCC congratulate Bert & Daphne on a wonderful achievement and pass on our very best at this difficult time.

CLEAN SWEEP!

Big Outright wins to the A1s and A3s headlined CPCC's first clean sweep of all senior grades in round 4. Wet weather during the week put day 2 in jeopardy however the rain stayed away to allow the A2s, B1s and B2s to complete dramatic run chases for first innings points and the A2s and A3s to bowl their opposition out twice. The B3s were the only team not to take the field on day 2 however they had already secured 7 points on day 1 thanks to Ryan Gracie. Ewen Chung was the star for the B2s whilst Luke Arcus dashed out of the car park and onto the ground just in time to score the 12 runs required from the last wicket for an A2 victory. Mick Mackin took 9 wickets for the match in A3s.

Rd 3 A3s On Fire With Maximum Points

The A3s cashed in on their big 304 total by rolling Newport twice and kick starting their season with an outright victory. With a total of 6 wickets over the two innings, Ray Dadwell led the bowlers with Luke Ireland and Mark Ennis (3 first innings wickets each) and Mick Mackin (4 second innings wickets) supporting to dismis Newport for 202 and 59.  At Vic Huxley Oval, the A1s came within a whisker of a thrilling outright win after a ten over, 120 run chase at the end of day 2. The Towers overhauled Belrose's 169 run first innings total 6 down and declared immediately. Haithwaite ripped through The Roses second dig taking 5 for 55 however stubborn tailend resistance left the home side a 12 runs an over chase over the last ten overs of the day. Minnett and Ferris were on target hitting the first 50 in five overs however the loss of wickets from there on left 26 off the last over. With only 8 batsmen available, the Towers settled for 7 points at 6 for 97. The B3s continued their winning ways and retained the 'Chewy Cup' against Manly Breakers thanks to 5 wickets and 50 runs from young Nick McLachlan. The B1s and A2s were unable to knock over a couple of key batsmen in their losses despite posting solid totals. B2s had the round off and remain undefeated.

Icon of Australian Cricket History Visits Vic Huxley Oval

A piece of Australian cricket history was on show at Vic Huxley Oval during the first week of round 6 when Ross Fairhall turned up with Dennis Lillee's famous aluminium cricket bat. Despite a number of the bats being produced and sold, it is understood that this is the bat controversially used by Dennis Lillee during the test match in Perth in 1978. The story goes that Dennis presented the bat to Qantas Flight crew in the bar of the Sheraton Hotel that evening after tossing the bat in disgust as he walked off the field earlier in the day.

With the demise of the Qantas cricket club, the bat has spent a number of years in someones garage before recently re-surfacing again and falling into Ross' hands.

VALE - Bert Elsworthy

News passed through last Friday morning that Life Member Bert Elsworthy had sadly passed away overnight. Bert has been a part of the Plateau and the Club since the beginning. As a player Bert scored 4289 runs over 19 seasons and kept wickets for many of those years taking almost 200 catches. Bert was President of the club for seasons 74/75 and 75/76. However it is as a family man, friend, mentor and Clubman that Bert will be most remembered. A recent article in the Manly Daily celebrated Bert & his wife Daphne's sixtieth wedding anniversary noting their contribution to the local community and Bert's keen interest in the Club. Bert, with his good mate Vic Huxley, also looked after the boys cricket teams in the early years eventually running the Saturday morning net squads during the 70s.

Bert's 'innings' of 87 was summed up by daughter Jan who said that the unlucky significance of the number would not have been lost on Bert, but he would acknowledge that any batsman averaging 87 would be happy. CPCC mourn the loss of a true gentleman and great Clubman. We pass on our very best to Daphne, Jan, Alan & Sue.

U14s to Light Up Vic Huxley Oval on Monday Nov 5th

20/20 Match v Lindfield

CPCC's U14 team will play a 20/20 match at Vic Huxley Oval - Collaroy Plateau on Monday afternoon/evening, November 5th commencing at 4pm. Lindfield cricket club will be the opposition in a specially organised event that all club members and Plateau residents are encouraged to attend to cheer the boys on.

All Teams Post Strong Batting Totals

The A1s powered towards first innings points by putting on 120 runs in the last nineteen overs of day one. Chasing Belrose's 169, the Towers lost only 2 wickets in what was meant to be a testing session late in the day. In front of a big crowd on the sideline, Rob Minnett (60*) and 'Nightwatchman' Marty Laird (50*) blasted the attack to all parts of Vic Huxley Oval leaving only 40 runs to get in a whole days play next week.

The A2s, A3s, B1s and B3s all batted first and put on totals ranging from 200 to 300. The B2s have the round off thanks to a last minute forfeit by their opposition.

Rd2

Century on Debut Leads A3s to Rd2 Victory

A century to debutant Mark Ennis capped off a successful run chase as the A3s put up their first win of the season at Dee Why Oval. Thanks to Jack Fox's 93, the B1s finished the job with an outright win with as did the B3s who continued their strong start adding the maximum 10 points - Ryan Gracie taking six wickets for the match. In  the B2s it was the Chung & Faulkner show (Graham that is). Both scored fifties and took four wickets in leading their team to a first innings win. Thanks to lost time due to lightning and no reward for plenty of strong LBW appeals, the A1s ended up with a draw after posting their huge 368 total whilst the A3s lost despite taking early wickets.

A1s Shake The Record Books Whilst B Grade Continues to Roll!

The A1s set what is potentially an A1 Club Record innings total at Balgowlah Oval on Saturday in the Grand Final replay against Seaforth. The Plateau batsmen capitalised on a strong start and good batting conditions to post the huge 7 for 368 total. Minnett and Henriksen with 60s led the way however none of the order missed out with the lowest score being 20. Meanwhile, the B1s have locked up 7 points early thanks to Stuart Forbes' 7 wicket haul. The B2s and B3s are in strong positions whilst the A2s and A3s are also well in the hunt going into day 2.

Local Cricket Once Again Suffers Third World Conditions

25/9/07 - Griffith Park: The A1s turned up at Griffith Park on day one of their season opener with Harbord BC to find the artificial grass surface torn to shreds. If vandalism isn't bad enough to swallow, it was soon realised that the damage to the pitch surface was undoubtedly caused by workmen uncovering it from the winter sports. Click here for more

DEVELOPMENTS 23/10/07: WSC have reacted by recovering the Griffith Park pitch with a brand new surface. The cricket nets at CPCC however remain in disrepair with holes in the surface and the netting despite notifying the hazards to WSC and several follow up emails.

B Grade Lead the Way in Round 1

Outright wins to both the B1 & B2 Grade and an exciting first innings win to the B3s saw CPCC start season 07/08 in spectacular fashion. The A1s also recorded a solid win whilst the A2s and A3s were encouraging in their unsuccessful efforts to chase down big totals. The B2s were the first team to put points on the board with a win on day 1 of the season and claimed all 10 points on day 2 thanks to the strong bowling performance of Ewen Chung. The B1s cashed in on Adam Peacock's maiden century on day 1 to also grab maximum points whilst the B3s had to wait to the last over of the day to get their final wicket and a win. The A1s chipped away at the 189 run chase to be 6 down for 192. Jason Ferris started his fulltime duty in the top grade with a solid 40*.

B1 players both climbed the highest peaks and plumbed the deepest depths in week 1. Adam Peacock (top) receives Player of the Day for his maiden century whilst Brian Siao (bottom) receives the Golden Duck medal.

Rugby League Trivia - Did you know?

CPCC has developed quite a football connection over the years, in fact we are starting to put together a first grade side with supporting personalities - on paper at least.

Here's how CPCC's team currently looks:

Fullback - Wayne Portlock (Nth Sydney)

Winger - Chris Hicks (Manly)

Centre - Andy Sanderson (St George)

Centre - Michael Blake (Manly/Souths)

Five Eight - Martin Meredith (Manly)

Half - Jason Ferris (Manly)

? - Jodie Gall (Penrith)

Reserve - Ryan Girdler (Penrith)

Coach - Frank Stanton (Manly & Aust)

Commentator - Mark Braybrook

Touch Judge - Steve Chiddy

There are still a few positions to fill, particularly in the forwards however there may be a few first graders in the club yet to be exposed. All those listed have played, coached or been fathers of players of CPCC. Frank Stanton coached the premiership winning Under 10s in 1978 involving his son Craig. Ryan Girdler is a fitting reserve as he was lined up to play B1s in 2002/03 and pulled out Saturday morning. Nearly up for inclusion is Steve Menzies whose brother played one game for A1s in the nineties.

52nd AGM Honours Club Stalwarts

CPCC's 52nd AGM was held on Friday night with around 35 members & associates attending. The AGM traditionally marks the end of business for the 06/07 season, and the opening of the new 07/08 cricket year. The night saw long time Club stalwarts Vicki Carden and John Jackson awarded life membership whilst Dave Quarford was honoured on his achievement of 25 seasons. The committee was returned with Brenden Ball joining as a delegate.

Ferris 'Snags' the Shearer!

The A3's Jason Ferris crowned a magnificent season when he received the Bruce Shearer Memorial Trophy at the annual Presentation Night on Friday. Jas' 1200 points resulting from 755 runs in all grades including three centuries and twenty wickets represents one of the best individual season performances in CPCC history . His run tally breaks Pete Henriksen's club record of 706 for the highest individual season total set in 1989/90. A big crowd attended the Club's night of nights at the Brookvale Hotel. Rob Minnett presented a highly entertaining visual presentation of what has been another great season for the club.
