ENGLAND 2009

President's message.

Dawn breaks on a chilly winter’s morning. Clad in a fine charcoal suit, a tall distinguished fellow man-handles a giant wheely-bag into an aluminium dinghy and pulls the zip-cord on the small outboard. Silence is his reward. His efforts become more and more frantic, the dark blue and gold cap bobbing up and down makes for a brilliant sight across the glassy water. Finally in a plume of purply-blue smoke the engine fires shattering the tranquil setting. The line is cast off and Jacko in his tinny-boat heads off from 'The Island' into the sunrise. The 2009 England Tour has begun.

When Singapore Airlines flight SQ220 departs Sydney at 0805 on July 2nd, 2009 bound for Manchester via Singapore, another exciting chapter is set to be written in our Club’s proud history. It gives me immense satisfaction, as I’m sure it does to all Life Members to know that our Club is prosperous, motivated and ambitious enough to embark on such endeavours. The legacy of the 2005 Tour for CPCC has been great, with enduring stories, images, camaraderie and Club spirit building endlessly on our already strong foundations. 2009 represents new cricket worlds to explore and conquer with games in Singapore and Amsterdam and our first visit to Yorkshire. There will be team trials & tribulations, epic tussles with our opponents, a pint or two after to savour the victory or mourn the defeat – and that’s just getting through customs!

I wish all Tourists, rookies and veterans alike all the cricketing best. We pray for safe travels, clear skies, good pitches and the return of Warney. I’m sure a glorious English summer awaits CPCC just as it does the Australians.

The Battle For The Dirck Hartogh Plate

A select XI have travelled to Amsterdam for a much anticipated match against the VRA club on 23 July at the VRA International ground. The locals were too good for the tourists with a close win in the final overs. Rob Minnett performed well with the bat whilst young Jake Carden's 2 wickets gave him MOTM honours. This match was a good a conclusion to a tour as one can imagine. It will be talked about for a long time to come. Click here for a full match report. Visit the VRA website for a match preview.

CPCC v England @ LORDS

The 2nd Test has gone to Day 5 courtesy of Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin. Whilst Vic Huxley Oval is renowned as the 'Home of Cricket', our Tourists will get to enjoy cricket at the English equivalent, Lords. As CPCC lobby PIPE International to get grass on our hallowed field, no doubt the MCC are chasing some big multi-national to get rid of that embarrassing slope. Look out for the sea of Blue & Gold baggy caps and polo shirts as no doubt they will attract the attention of the TV cameras. GO THE AUSSIES!!

Plateau lose their way at Duffield

An indifferent day greeted the few early risers, however by the time the bus rolled off the Derbyshire the clouds were breaking.  Dee and the driver missed the turn as we passed through Duffield and we ended up in the next town before the back seat drivers convinced those in the front to turn the ship around.  To further exacerbate being late the bus could not travel to the ground due to height restrictions (to keep the Gypsies out)and we hoofed it the final 700m.

CPCC, under John Jackson won the toss and sent Duffield in, their Terry Hills connection opening the batting.  Rohanek toiled well again with Faulkner starting at the other end. Some tidy fielding, especially Horstead and Faulkner diving along the sticky wicket square saved some key runs. Langy (2 for 40) and Jake Carden (1 for 20) bowled well and a boundary catch to Minnett  helped the CPCC cause. With Rohanek’s efforts of 2 for 55 CPCC looked to hold Bradfield to under 200 off their 40, unfortunately their Queensland pro took the game away from CPCC and they ended with 232.

CPCC needed a solid start and a four to Jacko of the second ball of the innings seemed promising.  However before the over was out he was the first of the victims of our difficulty with adjusting the damp slow low pitches. No CPCC batsman really got going and the chase was unseuccesful.  Fours were only hit by Minnett, Jacko and Langy. Horstead top scored with 18 batting at 4.  Other scores included  Minnett  14, Steve Carden 13 and Tom Carden 13 not out  with Jake again contributing at the end of the innings. CPCC all out in the 40th over for Nelson.

Rohanek was Duffield’s vote for Man of the Match and his reward was a cap and a Yard of Bitter.  He obliged and downed the Yard in one big and one little go. The evening BBQ and beautiful Duffield vista in the sun nicely rounded out the day that had its origins in another one of Jacko’s Mandalong connections.

Pies & Mushy Peas the Winner on the Day!

CPCC v Bradfield: The drive through the Peake district was an eye opener for some, especially those in the back seat of the support car as we wound rally style through Lancashire to Derbyshire to Yorkshire over snake pass.  Our reward for the winding country drive was a sensational farmers lunch at the Plough Inn, sponsors of Bradfield Cricket Club. The village of Low Bradfield surrounds the village green where CPCC took on Bradfield in an Ashes match.  Camo won the toss and chose to field.  A steady start from TC and Dee was not able to break the Bradfield opening stand and the young Bradfield openers grew with confidence.   Bradfield built their innings and had two men retire before CPCC made the first break through.

A good catch at cover by Forbes off Langy raised CPCC spirits and wickets to Jakey and Artie
“contained” Bradfield to 236 off their 40 overs. Had some difficult chances been held, especially parried sixes to TC and Steely, the score may have been less. Unfortunately the CPCC innings could not build momentum enough to challenge the Bradfield score.  Useful contributions from Deano (31) and Steely (17*) later in the order pushed the CPCC total to 136. Following on from a wonderful tea (including locally baked scones) the Bradfield locals put on pies and mushy peas for supper.  A ride across the north of England had the Tour bus safely deliver the Tourists to the ancient walled city of York, ready for the third leg for the 2009 Tour. (Report from T Horstead)

Roe Green Retain the Glen Powers Trophy

July 7: CPCC will have to tour again in 2013 as it has failed again to win the coveted Glen Powers Trophy against Roe Green. The home side's 250 off 40 overs proved too much for CPCC as they stumbled to all out 122 off 36 overs. Best performers for the Tourists were Rob Minnett and Toby Horstead, both with 42 runs, Dean Storey 2/63 and Brenden Ball 2/45 with the ball, and the Boat Race team which notched up another victory and remain undefeated against Roe Green.

Whilst news and results have been slow to filter back home (apart from a detailed shopping report from Vicki Carden), it is understood that Steve Carden currently holds the Golden Duck Medal after being the third victim of a hattrick at Earby! More details from the first week of the Tour in Manchester as they come to hand. The Tourists have now headed for York where they are scheduled to play Bradfield.

Monsoon At Marple

CPCC's 3rd fixture was unfortunately and comprehensively washed out despite the gallant efforts of the Marple groundsmen. Threatened with rain in 05, the fixture was lost as the CPCC team bus pulled into the driveway. Read the following report from Marple.

Hello again from Marple England.

Unfortunately our match against our friends from CPCC did not go to plan, being a victim of some very unseasonal weather. We experienced heavy rain in Marple the night before the fixture and when I arrived at our ground at 9.00 in the morning (fresh from dodging another heavy downpour), I was not too confident that we would be able to get some cricket (see photo's). Thanks to some stirling work from some of our lads who were roused from their beds, by about 1 o'clock we had got the ground into reasonable shape (see photo's) and we were looking forward to some kind of a game. Little did we know that the CPCC
bus was about to arrive dragging a large thunder cloud behind it!

As the CPCC chariot plunged up the drive to MCC, the rains hit again and we were back to square one - puddles on the pitch part 2. But undaunted the squeegies were broken out once again and with a dozen CPCC players armed with brushes and forks, we all set about the pitch again. Even the traction engine made an appearance to roll the wicket! Unfortunately it was to no avail, at 3.00 o'clock with a chance of a 20:20 still in the offing, the rain fell again and despite the CPCC's Borcat prostrating himself on the square to pray to the cricket God's for relief at 3.30, whilst tea was being taken, the apocalypse struck. Rain, thunder, hail, lightening (quite possibly a plague of frogs also) and what had once been a cricket pitch was soon a boating lake (see photo's). There was now no going back and the umpires were quick to call time and tuck into another sausage roll!

A real disappointment as we had been looking forward to your visit for some months and to be beaten by the weather was even more sickening then our defeat 4 years ago. Never mind, yet again we really enjoyed your guys' company and we would like to wish you all well - you are welcome
at the MCC again anytime. Hopefully, should you visit again, we shall organise the weather better!

Regards

Andy

The Eye For A Tiger

Singapore Stopover A Huge Hit!

CSC Ground Jul 3, 2009: CPCC’s 09 England Tour playing fixtures started in sensational fashion on July 3rd at the Ceylon Sports Club ground in Singapore against the MISFITS. Whilst CPCC narrowly lost the 30 over match against Mark Christensen’s Singapore based ex-pat team, the Tourists were overwhelmed by the hospitality of the Misfits and the fantastic venue. Arriving on July 2nd, the two clubs soon became good friends after a terrific night at The Cavern, a sports bar at Boat Quay in downtown Singapore. CPCC chalked up success early with several solid wins in the boat racing. The camaraderie carried over to the game where the tourists were slow to start in the tropical conditions waiting more than 10 overs before getting their first 09 Tour wicket. This honor went to the skipper Dean Storey who was the most effective of the bowlers followed by Andrew Davis. Chasing 202 off 30 overs the Towers got off to a great start courtesy of Andrew Cameron (17) and Adrian ‘Mugsy’ Molloy (30 retired). Further retirements to Rob Minnett and Arthur Smith left CPCC in a strong position but intervention by the Misfits star bowler, ex-CPCC opening bowler Mark Christensen left the remaining batsmen too many in too few overs. Deano again lifted with some big hitting late to give some hope but the tourists fell 11 short. CPCC's Man of the Match was Adrian Molloy. Mugsy's 30 opening the innings put  CPCC back in the match and fired up the Towers after their suffocating time fielding in the Singapore sweatbox. Thanks to Mark 'The Hammer' Christensen, Giri, Nisha and all the folks in Singapore for a magnificent time. I have a feeling CPCC could be back one day for a rematch.
